Christianity is distinctively an historical religion, grounded in objective events of God's involvement in human history. The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments witness uniquely to that involvement, thus making them the primary source for understanding the Christian faith. They are also the minister's source book for spiritual growth, for preaching and teaching, and for guidance in all aspects of ministry. For these reasons, the courses in this division enable students to develop a comprehensive knowledge of the Bible and its major themes, so that they may become proficient in its interpretation and informed in applying it to human life today. The division attempts to accomplish these goals by exposing students to an understanding of the social and cultural contexts out of which the Bible emerged, and by encouraging them to apply to the texts sound exegetical methods and critical analyses.
