The primary task of any denominationally sponsored theological seminary or divinity school is to equip men and women for effective Christian leadership in the faith community and the world. This is the central task of Hood Theological Seminary. Building on the rich and proud tradition of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church for its leadership in the liberation of the enslaved and oppressed, and promulgating the Gospel of Jesus Christ whose power to save both body and soul knows no limit, we at Hood set out to prepare women and men to be God's agents of change in the world.

That change begins with one's self, and in its process engages others in an ever-widening circle. This is the contagion of the transforming love of God in the heart of every true believer. It is as Charles Wesley wrote of the Methodist movement

See how great a flame aspires, Kindled by a spark of grace!

Here at Hood we set out to nurture that flame in the hearts of our students, and to provide them with the resources necessary to go out and help set the kingdoms ablaze for Christ.

Being fully committed to the ecumenical and Pan Methodist movements, we welcome among our students, faculty and staff people of various faith perspectives regardless of race and gender, allowing them to enrich the seminary community by the gifts with which God has richly blessed them, while being enriched themselves, by the fervor of our Wesleyan heritage. This diversity in our seminary community strengthens our life together in Christ and lifts our vision far beyond the limitation of human sight. In such a community we equip those who will lead others in faithful discipleship with Christ.
